Each week’s tuition is $165.00.
Times: Monday thru Friday 9 am- noon.
Place: University of Virginia, Ruffner Hall (map below)
Here’s a brief overview of a typical class day: first off we’ll discuss our writing goals for the day. Then we’ll do an exercise which will either be a collaborative project or an individual project. Then the writers will have time to work on projects of their choice. Some writers have expressed interest in working on projects already underway, and some will want to begin new works.
Instructor: Heather Burns, MFA, MA. Heather is a PhD candidate in the Curry School of Education. She has taught writing for 15 years to adults and children in a variety of settings. When she’s not working on her dissertation chapters, she teaches poetry and fiction, tutors students in writing, and works on developing the Charlottesville Writing Center.
Featuring also: Summer Intern, Lauren Bleam! Lauren is a rising senior at William & Mary and is an English major with a concentration in Creative Writing. She is a long time resident of Charlottesville and loves working with children. She writes poetry and fiction and paints.
We Welcome the following volunteers: Emma Miller, a rising first year at UVA; and Summer Crabtree, a high school English teacher from California! Couldn’t-a done it without all of you!
What to bring: Summer camp writers should pack a snack, some water, favorite notebooks, pens, pencils, and other essential writing supplies. A dictionary is the writer’s best friend so put a pocket sized version in your back pack.
Attention, homeschoolers:
Need to master the ABCs of writing that reflects critical thinking? Classes form when you need them.
Tutoring & Individual Sessions:
$45.00 per hour. No minimum.Offerings_files/Summer08Regist.pdfshapeimage_2_link_0

Directions to the drop off and pick up location:

Head South on Emmet St. On your left you will see tennis courts, a big gymnasium, and then a parking garage. Across from the parking garage is a pond. Ruffner Hall is the big building on the right that you see next. There is a lot of construction in going on at the building. Turn right at McCormick Road, onto a very short little ramp.  You will see a small parking lot on the right --DO NOT turn into that. Go a little bit further and turn right onto the next street. There is no name for that street.

You will see signs for the McCormick Residence Hall. Bonnycastle is the name of one of the dorms. THIS NAME is only a landmark. Below in this map, you see a map pin. Go to the end of the street where the turnaround circle is. The circle is where we will meet each day.

Also, here is a link to a UVA map. Take the right after building #41, the Physics Building.

If you are lost, just call, and one of our staff will come find you. 434-293-3702.
